The Lancang–Gengma earthquakes of November 6, 1988 were among the most devastating seismic events to impact Yunnan Province, located on the China–Myanmar border. These twin earthquakes, with magnitudes of 7.6 and 7.2, struck remote regions, resulting in significant damage to villages, infrastructure, and agricultural land. With limited immediate access to these mountainous areas, the destruction left thousands homeless, and critical resources were depleted as the disaster response unfolded. Tragically, at least 730 lives were lost in the earthquakes, with thousands more injured.

The quakes highlighted the vulnerabilities of Yunnan Province, a seismically active region with limited infrastructure for quake-resilient buildings. Due to the isolated nature of the affected areas, rescue operations faced significant delays, as roads were blocked and communication infrastructure was damaged. Many survivors faced difficult conditions, including limited access to clean water, food, and medical aid. This disaster prompted improvements in disaster response strategies and reinforced the importance of better building standards in earthquake-prone regions.

The quakes affected remote mountainous areas, damaging infrastructure and homes and leading to a tragic loss of life, with at least 730 fatalities reported. The disaster highlighted the vulnerability of earthquake-prone regions and the challenges of emergency response in isolated areas.
