The founding of the Missionaries of Charity by Mother Teresa on October 7, 1950, marked the beginning of one of the most significant humanitarian movements in modern history. Her mission was to serve the poorest of the poor in Kolkata, and this focus on providing dignity and care led to the establishment of homes for the dying, orphanages, and shelters for the homeless. The organization eventually expanded to more than 130 countries, with over 5,000 sisters and volunteers serving people affected by poverty, disease, and abandonment.

Mother Teresa's work was deeply rooted in her belief in selfless service, inspired by her faith and the teachings of Jesus Christ. She famously described her mission as giving "wholehearted free service to the poorest of the poor." Her work in Kolkata’s slums, particularly with the dying and leprosy patients, drew global attention and admiration, earning her several honors, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.

The Missionaries of Charity continues her work to this day, operating numerous homes, soup kitchens, orphanages, and health clinics around the world. Despite criticism from some quarters regarding the methods and conditions in the organization's care centers, Mother Teresa’s life remains a symbol of humility, faith, and devotion to humanity.

Her beatification by Pope John Paul II in 2003 and subsequent canonization as Saint Teresa of Calcutta by Pope Francis in 2016 further solidified her legacy. The Missionaries of Charity remains a testament to her belief in love and compassion for the most marginalized.

Mother Teresa’s humanitarian work earned her international recognition, and she became a symbol of compassion. Her mission was guided by the principles of love and service, with a focus on offering dignity and care to those suffering in extreme poverty. The Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 was a recognition of her lifelong dedication to helping the downtrodden. Today, the Missionaries of Charity continues her legacy with thousands of nuns and volunteers around the world.
